What is Glass Houses?
Glass Houses is a media label founded on the Internet in 2010, by Melissa Gira Grant.
We launched with the publication of our first book, Coming & Crying. We wanted to recognize the people we brought together to make the book: writers, photographers, designers, copy editors, printers.
We've produced other things that bring people together around books: blogs, audio, live events, and some other things that definitely aren't books, but we mostly do make books.
Community-supported publishing
The seed money for Glass Houses was raised through the production of Coming & Crying. We used Kickstarter to pre-sell the book, so we not only knew we had a readership for our first publication before it was even begun—we knew who our readers were.
There's something new about that, about knowing where your book is going before it's finished. (It's actually a lot like the Internet.)
We're just starting to see what we can do with that kind of assurance, and as publishers, what kinds of risks we can take.
